Brat Pack Living with Emma Mulholland

With Kanye West sporting your backpack design around town and Azealia Banks strutting in your pieces, to being in the glossy pages of Harper’s Bazaar, Emma Mulholland sure knows how to create a stylish commotion. The young Australian designer had models dancing away in their final runway walk to Dolly Parton’s nine to five to celebrate her collection RISQUE BUSINESS showcased at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia. During her studies at East Sydney TAFE, Emma stood out with her use of eye-catching materials and attention to neon details in her designs. This type of uniqueness in the designer got her selected as one of the four students from TAFE to showcase their graduate collection at Australian Fashion Week where she stood out with her loud and color expressive garments. While her debut collection created waves within the fashion industry, her collaboration with French street wear label “Jennyfer” was extremely successful selling out in just under 45 minutes.

Basing her MBFWA collection RISQUE BUSINESS off John Hughes Brat Pack and Melanie Griffith’s character in Working Girl. Playing with office supplies coated in candy colors that melted into each design that worked the runway in Carriageworks with nostalgic 80’s prints with Emma’s playful twist. Emma teamed up with Pared eyewear coming out with some funky clear and metallic specs along with designing jewellery with fellow creator Celeste Tesoriero. To finish off the look the models strutted in pastel colored New Balance sneakers paired with sequin socks.

In an interview with Paul Bui from Russh Magazine, Emma spoke about her inspiration behind her designs stemming from her hometown “I remember seeing surfers wearing hypercolour t-shirts and loved all the colourful 90s surfwear at the time. I love portraying that Australian identity. In Australia, we have such a rich culture and there’s so much inspiration we can find in our own backyards rather than copy from overseas. For my collection I wanted to evoke these memories of when you’re a kid and you first notice colour, it makes a big impact and stays with you for a long time.” (Read the full interview with Emma Mulholland here on Russh)
